Fresh analysis reveals that patients who discontinue popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who end conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Published data in a major medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people often shed about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"People using these treatments need to be cognizant of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery implies a reversion to original mass within about one and a half years.
Analyzing Approaches
The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.
Researchers emphasize that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise generally have a less rapid weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Explaining the Fast Rebound
Doctors suggest the way of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.
These medications copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Discontinuation of this medication means appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Chronic Disease?
Health authorities suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts contend that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment should be considered ongoing.
This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "highlight the chronic nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Experiences
Users who have discontinued the jabs describe a intense return of cravings.
"It was like a switch that goes on and you become extremely hungry," described a patient.
This difficulty is worsened if patients have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Growing Interest
Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.
- Adoption is more common among females compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians emphasize that while the jabs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated lifestyle management.
